spain- WHAT TO EXPECT
Spain has some of the most delicious food in the world! Eating tapas is one of the best ways to try different small plates of food and find out which dishes you like best. You will find magnificent architecture in Spain too, just like the Cathedral in Seville pictured below. You may find that in certain parts of Spain people do not speak English fluently so it is a good idea to practice your Spanish before your trip to Spain!
AVERAGE COSTS IN THIS AREA
Transportation– When Brett and I lived in Spain, we stayed in Seville which is a very walkable city. However, public transport such as buses are reliable and cheap throughout the country. It is possible to get domestic flights within Spain from city to city, this is a much faster option than travelling by coach.
Accommodation– When in Seville, Brett and I stayed in one apartment for 3 months through Airbnb. This was our first digital nomad destination and we made a few mistakes with choosing our accommodation. We paid £1,955.50 in total for 87 nights in Seville. This worked out as £22.47 total per night and £11.23 per person per night. It was cheap because we visited during the low season and the apartment itself was not of a high standard. I would suggest spending a little more and finding better accommodation. Of course, if you are living in a city the prices will be higher than in more rural areas.
Food– The food in Spain is wonderful! There are so many different dishes to choose from in different regions. Some of my favourite tapas dishes from Seville were pescado frito (fried fish), Jamon Iberico (acorn fed Iberian ham), Cazon en Adobo (fried dog fish) and Patatas con puplo (potatoes with octopus). Tapas dishes range in price from 2 euros – 13 euros depending on the dish and the restaurant that you choose. Drinks are also very affordable in Spain, especially Spanish branded beer which can cost as little as 1.50 euros for a small glass.
Suggested Daily Budget– You could spend £25-£30 per night on accommodation, £20 on food and drinks and £10 on transport in a day, making the daily budget between £55-£60. However, some days you will end up spending more than you anticipated due to transport costs and activities such as organised tours.
tips for first visit
1. Learn some basic Spanish words and phrases such as “Hola” meaning “Hello”, “Gracias” meaning “Thank you”, “Donde esta el estacion?” meaning “Where is the station?”. Try using a language learning app to help you with Spanish, such as Duolingo or Babbel.
2. Try as many different tapas dishes as humanly possible!!
3. Bring layers of clothing, the weather is variable and you don’t want to get caught out!
