What to See and Do in Split, Croatia
So, you’ve made the decision to move to Split, Croatia and become a digital nomad? (Good call!) Now what? Well, let me help you out with a list of the best things to see and do in Split, Croatia.
Diocletian’s Palace and Split Old Town
First up on your list should be the Diocletian’s Palace. This incredible structure was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s definitely worth a visit! It’s even possible to climb the famous bell tower and explore the underground ruins of the ancient city!
In Split Old Town you can find the wonderful Nadalina Chocolate Shop, located in one of the narrow alleys. Here you’ll find delicious hand-made local chocolates of all flavours. I particularly liked the lavender-flavoured one, it’s unusual but lavender is a native Croatian plant commonly found along the coast.
Hike Up Marjan Hill
Another must-see is Marjan Hill, which offers stunning views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. If you’re feeling active, you can hike to the top. Close to the base of the hill is a lovely cafe/restaurant called Teraca Vidilica where you can enjoy food and drinks with a stunning view of Split Old Town. It’s the perfect pitstop for a coffee to fuel you before walking up the hill. The drinks are very reasonable prices considering the location!
There are lots of hiking routes to take, some are shorter but you can also walk around the entire hill and reach the peninsular. At the top of Marjan hill, there is a zoo where you can feed the animals, it’s cheap to enter and the perfect place for families.
Drink Coffee on the Riva
Drinking coffee is like a religion here in Croatia, you’ll always find lots of people sitting outside of cafes enjoying their morning coffee. The coffee here is cheap and tasty! I suggest sitting on the Riva (promenade), getting a drink and watching the world go by.
Visit Bacvice Beach
Of course, no trip to Split would be complete without a visit to the beach! There are plenty of beaches to choose from, so take your pick and enjoy a day (or two) in the sun. My favourite beach to visit is just a short 10-15 minute walk from Split Old Town, Bacvice Beach. It’s a popular local beach with people of all ages enjoying the scenery and playing games like chess and handball.
Day Trips From Split
Split is a great city to base yourself in as a digital nomad. From here, you can take day trips to some of the most beautiful locations in Croatia.
Some of my favourite day trips:
Hvar Island
Hvar is a picturesque town on an island of the same name. It’s well known for its wine and beaches and is a popular destination for tourists. You can get a boat to Hvar in one hour, and the boat ticket is not too expensive, but once you arrive in Hvar, expect to pay premium prices. From Hvar town, you can make your way up the hill to the Fortica Fortress where you’ll find amazing views of the island and surrounding islands too!
The ferry boats have different timetables in high and low seasons. Make sure to check the ferry times and be at the port on time, otherwise, you might find yourself stuck in Hvar for the night! Check the ferry timetables here.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited parks in Croatia. The park is known for its 16 lakes, waterfalls and travertine barriers. From Split, it takes around 3 hours by coach or car to arrive at Plitvice Lakes. Once you’re there it takes about 2-3 hours to walk around the park.
You can choose to go on an organised tour to Plitvice Lakes which lasts around 12 hours once you’ve visited the lakes there will be the chance to eat lunch (optional) at a local restaurant before heading back to Split. Take a look at Plitvice Lakes Tours here.
Krka waterfalls
Krka Waterfalls is a must-see when you’re in Croatia! It’s a stunning national park with the most beautiful waterfalls and scenery. From Split, it takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the National Park. Once you arrive, you can take a leisurely stroll around the park, enjoying the magical scenery.
There are a few small cafes where you can buy cold and hot drinks and sandwiches, as well as souvenir shops. If you go on an organised tour, you will probably have around 2 hours to explore the park before heading off.
If you’re in Split for a short time and can’t decide what to see, put Krka at the top of your list!
Book a Krka Waterfalls tour here!
Trogir Town
About an hour’s bus ride from Split, Trogir is so picturesque and the perfect place for a nearby day trip! There are some fabulous restaurants here, my favourite is Restoran Amfora, they serve the best fresh tuna steaks, pizzas and pasta!
Trogir is a very small town, you can walk around all of it easily in an afternoon. Be sure to take a look at Kamerlengo Fortress located at the end of the Riva, it’s a great photo spot!
Omiš Town
Omiš is another beautiful little town close to Split, it is a 30-minute bus ride from Split Old Town and is unique because it is located on the coast and with a backdrop of impressive mountains. There is a lovely sandy beach in Omiš, making it the perfect place to relax, sunbathe and swim in the crystal clear sea!
Imotski
Imotski is a small inland town, off-the-beaten-track. Near Imotski you can visit Blue Lake, Red Lake and Topana Fortress. There is a wonderful winery here called Vinarija Glavota that is well worth a visit! Read more about Imotski here.
Brač
Brač is another island to visit from Split. It’s a quiet island and a perfect spot for some lunch. There is also a wonderful sandy beach on the island called Golden Horn Beach (Zlatni Rat, in Croatian).
Best Eats in Split
When you’re in Split, you need to try the local food. And by local food, I mean seafood. The best places to eat seafood are PiNKU fish & wine, DeListes restaurant Split, and PORTOFINO Steak.
If you’re looking for something specific, then I recommend trying Peka. It’s a hearty dish of meat and potatoes, slow-cooked under a bell-like lid made of baked clay, and it’s absolutely delicious.
But don’t just take our word for it—delve into the Croatian culinary landscape on a food tour guided by a local. You’ll get to try all sorts of traditional Croatian dishes, and you’ll learn all about the history and culture behind them.
My favourite places to eat:
Getting Around In Split
If you’re thinking of making Split your home base for a while as a digital nomad, you’ll be glad to know that the city is well-equipped for your needs. It’s located on the coast of the Adriatic sea and has a slow rhythm that you will quickly get used to. Plus, there are plenty of coworking spaces and events to keep you busy while you’re there.
Getting around the city is easy; most places are within walking distance or you can take public transport. The only downside is that the buses can be pretty crowded during peak hours. If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, hire a bike or take a walk along the coast.
Living in Split as a digital nomad is a great experience. The city is incredibly walkable, especially if you live in or near the Old City walls. Transportation is accessible and easy to use, and the cost of living is affordable. There are plenty of events and coworking spaces to choose from, and the people are warm and welcoming.
Local buses run to some of the nearby day trip locations that were mentioned earlier in this guide. The buses are cheap but can sometimes run late, especially during peak hours.
While in Split, be sure to check out the Archeological Museum, Diocletian’s Palace, and Marjan Park. And if you’re looking for a day trip, be sure to visit Krka National Park or Plitvice Lakes. Finally, when choosing where to stay in Split, be sure to check out my recommendations!
Where to Stay in Split, Croatia
If you’re thinking of spending some time in Split, there are plenty of great options for digital nomads in this vibrant city.
One great choice is Marvie Hotel, which caters towards digital nomads specifically, offering long-term stays of 28 days with a discount of 50%. Their coworking space is available for hotel guests and all other digital nomads in Split. It’s located 1.5km away from Split Old Town and 200m from the sea. This is a perfect spot for those who want to enhance their productivity and creativity. The space offers a variety of amenities, including fast Wi-Fi and a well-equipped kitchen. Day passes start at £14 for non-hotel guests.
Check out Airbnb for deals on long-term stays in Split. I stayed in a quirky 3-storey townhouse when I visited and it was a 2-minute stroll away from the heart of the Old Town.

There’s also Meridien Ten, which offers part-time and dedicated workspaces. Meridien Ten is a little further away from Split Old Town but still a great option, especially with the use of bikes!

The Works
Another great option is The Works. This trendy coworking space is open 24/7 so it’s perfect for night owls and early birds alike! It’s also located close to the beach and the city centre, making it a perfect choice for those who want to be close to all the action.
